I’m on a mission to create the most amazing facial — an experience that feels luxurious, intentional, and unforgettable.
But to get there, we have to start from the very beginning. The magic begins before you even touch the client’s skin. It’s all in the atmosphere, the comfort, and the thoughtful details that make them feel completely cared for.
Here are a few things that I believe set the foundation for an incredible facial experience:
1. The Power of Scent: Essential Oils
The moment a client walks through the door, their senses start to shape how they feel. I love having a diffuser running — it instantly sets the tone for relaxation.
I constantly get compliments on how amazing my spa smells from the moment clients walk in. I use two favorite essential oils from ESS Aromatherapy (via Universal Companies):
- Relaxation Water Soluble Essential Oil Blend — a calming mix of lavender, tangerine, and patchouli
- Peppermint Essential Oil — fresh, energizing, and uplifting
A soothing scent is such a simple way to create that “wow” moment right away.
2. The Mood: Lighting & Ambiance
Lighting makes such a difference. I love a good spa glow, so I always keep the lights dim and the flameless candles flickering. They give the space that cozy, soft glow without the worry of open flame.
My favorites are the Artisan Ivory Wax Luminaries Candle Holders from Universal Companies — they add warmth, elegance, and a touch of calm that helps every client unwind the moment they lie down.
3. The Foundation: The Treatment Bed
The treatment bed totally matters. If your client isn’t completely comfortable, they won’t fully relax — and that’s where the experience starts to lose its magic.
I have the most amazing mattress topper from Sol Beauty Co. — it makes such a huge difference in how cozy and plush the bed feels. I also use a disinfectable cover that goes over it, so I can keep everything sanitary without sacrificing comfort.
4. The Finishing Touch: Sheets and Presentation
Let’s talk about the sheets. For years, I used budget-friendly options from big box stores — they were okay, but nothing special. Then I upgraded to Comphy and it was a total game changer.
Their bed skirt instantly elevates the look of a standard massage table and makes it feel spa-level chic. I like to keep things minimalistic, so I go with crisp white sheets. Then I add a bed warmer and a leg pillow to complete the cozy, elevated setup.
5. Massage & Hands: The Spa Experience That Feels Like Home
Now, after all of this, I get really particular about my massage creams. I honestly believe that one of the reasons I’ve had such great client retention is because I put so much detail into their comfort and helping them fully relax.
I always check if clients are okay with CBD, because so many come in with tension or tight necks. For me, a key part of my philosophy — “a spa-like experience with result-driven treatments” — comes down to massage. I like to give a long lymphatic massage on the face during every facial, along with a scalp massage, neck, decollete, arms, and a hand treatment.
My favorite massage creams are:
- Biotone Lab Blends CBD Massage Cream — super soothing and relaxing
- Sacred Earth Botanicals Warming Massage Lotion — I especially love this warming one during the winter, and clients often ask to purchase it
For hand treatments, I adore paraffin therapy — especially eucalyptus and peppermint. The cooling, refreshing scent is so relaxing. I make sure to use the full kit and follow the technique I learned while working at Burke Williams: melt the paraffin in a warmer, paint it on the hand, then use the plastic liner and mittens. My favorites are:
These little touches make a huge difference — they transform a facial from just a treatment into a full, spa-like experience that clients love and remember.
This is just the beginning of my journey to create the perfect facial. Next, I’ll be sharing how I build out the rest of the experience — from music and flow to finishing touches — all the little details that transform a facial into something truly memorable.
Because when you design every element with care, your clients feel it.
