- Why My First Solo Attempt at a Business Failed (And What I Learned)
When I first decided to go solo, I thought I had it all figured out. I came from a background managing a dental office, where I excelled at marketing and bringing people in the door. I knew grassroots strategies—passing out flyers, handing out business cards, hustling like a beast—and social media? That was my playground. I even worked with influencers and had a strong blog following. I thought I had the secret formula. But here’s the thing: fortune is in the follow-up. And that’s where I completely fell short. 1. Terrible Consultations I didn’t know how to properly consult with clients. I didn’t understand impaired barriers, and I wasn’t well-versed in my back bar. On a first-time client, I once put a blueberry enzyme on their skin. Why? Purely rookie mistake. And yes, one time a friend of Kylie Jenner came in, and I tried to “wow” her with a cherry Skinscript enzyme. Terrible decision. My consultations lacked structure, and I wasn’t customizing treatments based on actual skin needs. 2. No Retail Strategy I didn’t sell products. I literally sent clients to Ulta to buy Dermalogica. This was a massive mistake. If a client came in for acne or hyperpigmentation, I couldn’t prep their skin to move them up to stronger treatments. I went too strong too fast because I didn’t have a system to gradually introduce them. Without retail, I couldn’t create a proper regimen to prep skin for more advanced treatments, which affected results—and results equal retention. 3. Follow-Up Was Nonexistent Even though I could get people in the door, they weren’t coming back. My follow-up was chaotic. And honestly, my massage techniques and the way I spoke with clients probably didn’t help either. Lessons I Learned (And What You Need to Know Before Going Solo) If you’re struggling with retention or results, here’s what I wish I knew: Learn your back bar inside and out. Know every product, every tool, every mixology possibility. If you’re specializing in skincare, know what an impaired barrier is, what a dehydrated barrier is, and how to treat each. It’s completely different than treating younger clients with healthy skin who have acne. Prep your client’s skin before treatments. Don’t jump straight to the strongest peel or enzyme. Start at the right level, prep their skin for weeks if necessary, and build up gradually. Have a retail strategy. Whether you’re a waxer, lash artist, or esthetician, give clients products to take home. Educate them, support their results, and let them know the cycle of treatments (like hair growth cycles or lash health) so they understand why follow-ups matter. Set expectations and say no when needed. If a client’s skin or lashes are compromised, don’t force a treatment. Be honest, create a treatment plan, and sell packages to lock them in. Retail often matters more than a one-time treatment, especially when someone’s barrier or condition needs care before moving on to advanced procedures. Follow up consistently. Results don’t stop in the treatment room. Check in, educate, and guide your clients so they see progress. That’s what keeps them coming back. All of this taught me a crucial lesson: getting clients in the door is only half the battle. If you don’t know how to retain them, educate them, and create results they can see and feel, your business will struggle. The first time around, I learned the hard way. But now, with experience, I understand the systems, strategy, and structure required to run a successful solo business. And yes—it’s all about the follow-up.

The Power of Scent: Essential Oils The moment a client walks through the door, their senses start to shape how they feel. I love having a diffuser running — it instantly sets the tone for relaxation. I constantly get compliments on how amazing my spa smells from the moment clients walk in. And because many clients need to get back to their day quickly, I make sure the bathroom is stocked with little conveniences that make life easier. In one email. 💔 That is when it hit me: too much email too quickly can push even your most loyal subscribers away. And the scary part? For estheticians who want to treat pigment with purpose. Hyperpigmentation is one of the most common concerns we see in the treatment room, yet one of the most misunderstood. And if you’re treating every dark spot the same way, you’re probably not getting the results you could be. Let’s break down what hyperpigmentation really is, what causes it, and how to treat it with both strategy and science. What Is Hyperpigmentation? Hyperpigmentation is an umbrella term for darkened patches or spots on the skin caused by excess melanin production. It’s not a condition in itself, it’s a symptom of something deeper: inflammation, trauma, UV exposure, or hormonal changes. Types of Hyperpigmentation Estheticians Should Know: Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) Caused by acne, picking, heat, or irritation. These spots are usually flat and pink, brown, or grey, depending on skin tone. Common in Fitz IV–VI, and one of the most frustrating for acne-prone clients. Sun-Induced Pigment (Lentigines/Freckles) Caused by repeated UV exposure over time. Typically show up as small, defined spots, especially on the face, neck, chest, and hands. Freckles (Ephelides) Genetically driven, but darken with the sun. These are normal and benign, but many clients confuse them with damage. Melasma A chronic, hormonally influenced pigmentation disorder. Often mistaken for PIH or sun damage, but much deeper and harder to treat. Common Causes of Hyperpigmentation UV exposure (with or without sunburn) Inflammation (acne, eczema, injury, heat) Overuse of exfoliants or actives Improper post-treatment care Hormonal changes (melasma-related) Often, pigment is worsened by a combination of these factors, not just one. This helps reduce the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) and creates a more even, predictable outcome. Look for ingredients like: Arbutin Vitamin C Azelaic acid (if tolerated) Licorice root extract Mushroom extract NAD+ (for inflammation support and cellular repair) Pre-treatment should begin 2–4 weeks prior to any moderate or deep treatment for optimal results. This is one of the most overlooked steps, and one of the most important , especially if you want to protect melanin-rich skin and earn long-term client trust. Prevention: It Starts With SPF If your client is doing everything right and still struggling with dark spots, start with the sunscreen. Non-tinted SPF works for most types of pigment (PIH, sun spots). Tinted SPF with iron oxides is critical for melasma and pigment-prone skin, especially in deeper Fitz types. Why? Because visible light (not just UV) plays a role in pigment activation, especially with melasma and deeper skin tones. Pro Insight You can’t treat what you can’t identify. Always determine: •What type of pigment you're dealing with •Where it’s coming from (epidermal vs. dermal) •What the client’s habits and triggers are The more precise your approach, the better your outcomes, and the more trust you build as a pro. How to Spot the Different Types of Acne Scars 1. Ice Pick Scars What they look like: Deep, narrow indentations that look like tiny holes or punctures. Cause: Inflammation that destroys collagen in a vertical pattern. How to treat: These are the most difficult to treat and often require multiple modalities. RF microneedling, TCA CROSS, or deep skin resurfacing can help. Combine with collagen-supporting topicals to improve skin quality over time. 2. Boxcar Scars What they look like: Round or oval depressions with defined edges, like little craters. Cause: Loss of tissue in a broad area, usually from long-term cystic acne. How to treat: Microneedling or microchanneling works well here, especially when paired with growth factors, peptides, or NAD+ serums. Chemical peels can also help soften edges and improve skin tone. 3. Rolling Scars What they look like: Wavelike undulations in the skin, usually on cheeks or jawline. Cause: Fibrous bands pulling down the skin beneath the surface. How to treat: These often need subcision or RF microneedling to break up the tethering. Burnout is something I know all too well. There was a time when I wasn’t giving my best in the treatment room because I was just exhausted—mentally and physically. I had to be honest with myself and recognize that I needed to make some changes in order to get back to the work I love. Prioritizing Mental and Physical Health One of the first things I did was start therapy. It made a huge difference for my mental health, and it gave me the tools to manage stress better. I also started working out, and even though it wasn’t easy at first, it helped me feel better, stronger, and more energized throughout the day. I took a real look at my schedule and made sure I was being honest about what worked for me. I also adjusted my pricing because I realized that if you’re not making enough to actually make a living , you’re just running yourself ragged . Once I made those changes, things started feeling a lot more manageable, and I could see the difference in my work. Making Time for Self-Care It’s so easy to put everyone else first and forget about your own needs. I knew I had to change that. I started getting monthly massages to take care of my back, and I made exercise a regular part of my routine. Small things like that really started making a difference in how I felt, both physically and mentally. Working Smarter, Not Harder I don’t say no to appointments, but I’ve learned to be more realistic about my time. I started taking breaks in between clients and made sure to leave 20 minutes between each appointment. It helped me reset and not feel rushed. I also started sending out a weekly newsletter to my clients, which keeps me on their minds without constantly chasing them for bookings. And when I have cancellations, I’ve learned to take it in stride. Instead of stressing, I use that time to rest and recharge.
