  • Get to Know: Universal Companies (John & Marti)

Hi everyone I’m John, co-owner of Universal Companies alongside my mom (and hero) Marti, who founded the business 40+ years ago. I wanted to take a moment to say how grateful we are to be part of this group. Universal actually started as an esthetics-focused day spa before we ever became a spa supplier. Mom built it as a single mother, so the business was basically my second home as a kid. Universal has grown a lot since then: we now support over 80,000 spa professionals and businesses around the world, but solo esties will always have our heart. We know how much drive it takes to open that first room, build your book of business, and keep going when things get tough. That’s why this partnership with the Money Making Esthetician community is so meaningful to us. We’re here to share what we’ve learned working with the best spas in the world, highlight tools and ideas that can save you time and money, and hopefully make your entrepreneurial journey a little smoother. Thank you for welcoming us into your community — we can’t wait to learn, share, and grow alongside you. John

  • Can You Send Too Many Newsletters? (Learn From My Mistake Before It Costs You Subscribers)

I am sharing this because I do not want you to make the same mistake I did. Recently, I completely messed up my email schedule. Somehow, my newsletters were lined up to go out back to back: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. By the time Wednesday hit, I opened my email analytics… and saw six of my favorite clients had unsubscribed. Six. In one email. 💔 That is when it hit me: too much email too quickly can push even your most loyal subscribers away. And the scary part? It is not just about losing subscribers — sending emails too often can hurt your brand reputation, your deliverability rates, and even how your emails show up in inboxes. What is Newsletter Fatigue? “Newsletter fatigue” is when your audience feels like they are getting too much from you — too many messages, too often, and not enough breathing room. It is kind of like that friend who texts you every five minutes for updates. You love them, but it is a lot. When people hit “unsubscribe,” it is often not because they do not like you anymore — it is because their inbox is overloaded and you became part of the noise instead of the value. Can You Actually Send Too Many Emails? Yes — and here is why it is risky: • Your open rates drop because people start ignoring your emails • Your unsubscribe rate spikes (like my six in one day horror story) • You trigger spam filters, especially if you are emailing too frequently without enough engagement • You burn out your list and lose long term trust How Often Should You Send a Newsletter? There is no one size fits all, but here is what research and industry averages say: • Service based businesses (like beauty, wellness, coaching): 1 to 4 times per month is the sweet spot • E-commerce and retail: 1 to 2 times per week for regular engagement, with occasional extra sends for launches or sales • Educational and community based businesses: Weekly or bi-weekly tends to keep people engaged without overwhelming them Best Days and Times to Send Newsletters Studies show that your timing matters almost as much as your content: • Best days: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday (people are in “work mode” but not drowning in Monday emails or checked out for Friday or the weekend) • Best times: • Morning: 9 to 11 AM (before lunch slump) • Afternoon: 1 to 3 PM (after lunch but before the end of day rush) • Pro tip: Test different days and times with your audience — your analytics will tell you when they are most engaged Signs You Are Sending Too Many Emails Watch for these red flags: • Your unsubscribe rate is higher than 0.5 percent per send • Open rates are steadily declining (industry average is around 20 to 25 percent) • You are getting direct feedback like, “I missed this” or “I cannot keep up” • People start marking your emails as spam (even unintentionally) How to Avoid Newsletter Fatigue (and Keep Your Audience Engaged) 1. Create a content calendar so you are not stacking emails too close together 2. Vary your content — do not just sell, mix in education, personal stories, behind the scenes, and value packed tips 3. Segment your list — send certain emails only to people who would actually be interested in that content 4. Use analytics as your guide — if your numbers start dropping, pull back 5. Space out promotions — if you are doing a big push for something, make sure to build breathing room before and after The Bottom Line Email marketing is one of the most powerful tools you have for building trust, nurturing relationships, and driving sales. But more is not always better. If you overload your audience, you risk turning value into noise — and once people unsubscribe, it is hard to get them back. So take it from me: plan your sends, respect inbox space, and focus on delivering content your audience actually wants to open.

  • Understanding Hyperpigmentation - A Pro’s Guide

For estheticians who want to treat pigment with purpose. Hyperpigmentation is one of the most common concerns we see in the treatment room, yet one of the most misunderstood. And if you’re treating every dark spot the same way, you’re probably not getting the results you could be. Let’s break down what hyperpigmentation really is, what causes it, and how to treat it with both strategy and science. What Is Hyperpigmentation? Hyperpigmentation is an umbrella term for darkened patches or spots on the skin caused by excess melanin production. It’s not a condition in itself, it’s a symptom of something deeper: inflammation, trauma, UV exposure, or hormonal changes. Types of Hyperpigmentation Estheticians Should Know: Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) Caused by acne, picking, heat, or irritation. These spots are usually flat and pink, brown, or grey, depending on skin tone. Common in Fitz IV–VI, and one of the most frustrating for acne-prone clients. Sun-Induced Pigment (Lentigines/Freckles) Caused by repeated UV exposure over time. Typically show up as small, defined spots, especially on the face, neck, chest, and hands. Freckles (Ephelides) Genetically driven, but darken with the sun. These are normal and benign, but many clients confuse them with damage. Melasma A chronic, hormonally influenced pigmentation disorder. Often mistaken for PIH or sun damage, but much deeper and harder to treat. We’ll dive into melasma more deeply in the next post, because it deserves its own protocol discussion. Common Causes of Hyperpigmentation UV exposure (with or without sunburn) Inflammation (acne, eczema, injury, heat) Overuse of exfoliants or actives Improper post-treatment care Hormonal changes (melasma-related) Often, pigment is worsened by a combination of these factors, not just one. Key Ingredients to Look For Estheticians need more than just a “brightening serum.” The goal is to regulate melanin production, calm inflammation, and support barrier repair - all at once Ingredients Why it works Arbutin Inhibits tyrosinase to prevent melanin overproduction Vitamin C Brightens, protects against free radicals, and supports collagen Mushroom Extract Calms inflammation and helps even tone NAD+ Supports cell repair and reduces oxidative stress Centella Asiatica Soothes skin and reduces pigment-related inflammation Squalane & Panthenol Restore barrier function and improve tolerance to actives Treatment Strategy: What Works for Pigmentation ✔️Gentle exfoliation (enzymes, lactic, mandelic) ✔️ Brightening serums (arbutin, vitamin C, mushroom) ✔️ Consistent home care and client education ✔️ Barrier support (especially post-procedure) ✔️ Daily SPF – no exceptions Pigment doesn’t fade quickly. The best results come from layering treatments over time—with smart home care and strict sun protection. Pre-Treatment is Non-Negotiable for Fitz 4–6 Before diving into chemical peels, microneedling, or any advanced resurfacing treatments, it’s critical to pre-treat higher Fitzpatrick skin types with pigment inhibitors. This helps reduce the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) and creates a more even, predictable outcome. Look for ingredients like: Arbutin Vitamin C Azelaic acid (if tolerated) Licorice root extract Mushroom extract NAD+ (for inflammation support and cellular repair) Pre-treatment should begin 2–4 weeks prior to any moderate or deep treatment for optimal results. This is one of the most overlooked steps, and one of the most important , especially if you want to protect melanin-rich skin and earn long-term client trust. Prevention: It Starts With SPF If your client is doing everything right and still struggling with dark spots, start with the sunscreen. Non-tinted SPF works for most types of pigment (PIH, sun spots). Tinted SPF with iron oxides is critical for melasma and pigment-prone skin, especially in deeper Fitz types. Why? Because visible light (not just UV) plays a role in pigment activation, especially with melasma and deeper skin tones. Pro Insight You can’t treat what you can’t identify. Always determine: •What type of pigment you're dealing with •Where it’s coming from (epidermal vs. dermal) •What the client’s habits and triggers are The more precise your approach, the better your outcomes, and the more trust you build as a pro. What’s Next? In our next post, we’ll dive into melasma - how to identify it, how to manage it, and why your approach needs to be completely different from typical pigment protocols. With over 20 years of hands-on experience, Guru Sugaring Academy brings you signature finesse and sugarball mastery to this transformative summit. This is more than a training course. It's a career catapult!  What inspired you to start teaching Manzilian sugaring?  Men are some of my favorite, most loyal clients and there is a demand for the service in the industry. There is a lot of fear surrounding this service but men deserve to have options too and they're very lucrative, consistent clients. My goal is to create more awareness of proper bedside manner, technique and troubleshooting different scenarios in the treatment room. What’s the biggest skill or mindset shift students walk away with after your class?  How to handle different conversations, avoid creepy clients altogether and of course, maximizing their results for the service with proper mapping of the anatomy. Who is this class really for? Can beginners take it, or should they have waxing experience?  Sugarists that have mastered the basics at minimum and ideally female anatomy.  What are the most common fears estheticians have about offering Manzilians—and how do you help them overcome those? Do you provide scripts or tips for navigating awkward moments or first-time male clients? Inappropriate behavior, erections, navigating the anatomy, conversations. We go over how to screen a new client, educate about natural bodily functions and how to normalize & diffuse them, map a manzilian and provide helpful topics to converse about in the treatment room. What’s included in the class? Do students get hands-on experience?   The class is 6 hrs of hands-on models and we also include a virtual manzilian training library for continued reference as well as ongoing phone and zoom support. How much can adding Manzilians increase your monthly income or bookings?  Manzilians are an average of $20 more than female brazilians due to availability and skill set. You can increase your monthly income significantly; If you see 4 manzilian clients a week that equals $1520 a month not including gratuities. Plus clients buy the products you recommend too.  Can students use this training to market themselves differently or stand out in their area?  This is a service that is typically hard to find. Adding it to your portfolio will only make one more in demand. They will get referrals from all over as the word gets out and people will drive a distance to see them once they set their presence as an available standard. What advice would you give to someone who’s curious about taking the class but still nervous?  This service is not as intimidating as it seems once you have the tools to navigate the bedside manner with proper etiquette tips and are familiar with how to handle & map the service area. Space is Limited!! • How to Identify and Treat Acne Scars: A Guide for Estheticians

Not all acne scars are created equal, and treating them successfully starts with knowing exactly what you’re looking at.  As estheticians, we’re often the first stop for clients hoping to fade the marks left behind by years of breakouts. But to create an effective plan, we need to do two things really well: Identify the type of scarring  Choose the right combination of treatments and ingredients  Let’s break it down step-by-step.  How to Spot the Different Types of Acne Scars  1. Ice Pick Scars  What they look like: Deep, narrow indentations that look like tiny holes or punctures. Cause: Inflammation that destroys collagen in a vertical pattern.  How to treat: These are the most difficult to treat and often require multiple modalities. RF microneedling, TCA CROSS, or deep skin resurfacing can help. Combine with collagen-supporting topicals to improve skin quality over time.  2. Boxcar Scars  What they look like: Round or oval depressions with defined edges, like little craters. Cause: Loss of tissue in a broad area, usually from long-term cystic acne. How to treat: Microneedling or microchanneling works well here, especially when paired with growth factors, peptides, or NAD+ serums. Chemical peels can also help soften edges and improve skin tone.  3. Rolling Scars  What they look like: Wavelike undulations in the skin, usually on cheeks or jawline. Cause: Fibrous bands pulling down the skin beneath the surface.  How to treat: These often need subcision or RF microneedling to break up the tethering. Collagen-building topicals are crucial between treatments to support dermal remodeling.  4. Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) - Technically not a scar, but your clients probably think it is. What it looks like: Flat dark spots left behind after a breakout, often mistaken for scarring. Cause: Melanin overproduction due to inflammation.  How to treat: This isn’t technically a scar, but it’s what clients most often complain about. Brightening agents (like arbutin, vitamin C, and mushroom extract), combined with calming ingredients like Centella Asiatica, are key.  Pro tip: Take photos and chart scar types during consultations. This helps track progress and build trust as you customize treatment.  Treatment Options That Work  There is no single solution for acne scars, but there is a smart way to layer treatments for better results.  1. Microneedling / Microchanneling  Stimulates natural collagen production  Ideal for boxcar, rolling, and shallow ice pick scars  Pair with actives like peptides, growth factors, or NAD+ for enhanced results 2. Chemical Peels  Excellent for textural smoothing and pigment improvement  Great as a prep or maintenance treatment  CMCA (monochloroacetic acid), TCA( trichloroacetic acid), glycolic, or mandelic peels are promising options depending on scar type and skin tone  3. LED Therapy  Red light reduces inflammation and supports healing post-treatment  Blue light can help manage active acne if breakouts are still present  4. Skin-Barrier Recovery + Post-Care  Don’t skip this! Post-treatment healing is where results really come together. Use calming, hydrating ingredients like panthenol , Centella Asiatica , and squalane to minimize downtime and support collagen remodeling.  Key Ingredients That Support Scar Revision  Here are some ingredients every acne-scar-focused esthetician should have in their arsenal: NAD+ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide) What it does: Energizes cells, supports DNA repair, and boosts  collagen production Ideal for: All scar types Copper Peptides What it does: Promotes skin regeneration and wound healing Ideal for: Boxcar, rolling, and post-treatment repair Growth Factors What it does: Stimulates fibroblasts and collagen synthesis Ideal for: Supporting dermal regeneration and scar softening Centella Asiatica What it does: Reduces inflammation and supports tissue repair Ideal for: Rolling scars, PIH, and sensitive skin Arbutin + Vitamin C What it does: Brightens pigment, evens tone, and supports skin clarity Ideal for: PIH and uneven tone post-acne Squalane + Panthenol What it does: Strengthen the skin barrier, reduce inflammation, and support healing Ideal for: Essential for pre- and post-treatment recovery, all scar types Want to learn more about the science behind great skin results? • How I Overcame Burnout as an Esthetician: Tips for Prioritizing Mental Health, Self-Care & Work-Life Balance

Burnout is something I know all too well. There was a time when I wasn’t giving my best in the treatment room because I was just exhausted—mentally and physically. I had to be honest with myself and recognize that I needed to make some changes in order to get back to the work I love. Prioritizing Mental and Physical Health One of the first things I did was start therapy. It made a huge difference for my mental health, and it gave me the tools to manage stress better. I also started working out, and even though it wasn’t easy at first, it helped me feel better, stronger, and more energized throughout the day. I took a real look at my schedule and made sure I was being honest about what worked for me. I also adjusted my pricing because I realized that if you’re not making enough to actually make a living , you’re just running yourself ragged . Once I made those changes, things started feeling a lot more manageable, and I could see the difference in my work. Making Time for Self-Care It’s so easy to put everyone else first and forget about your own needs. I knew I had to change that. I started getting monthly massages to take care of my back, and I made exercise a regular part of my routine. Small things like that really started making a difference in how I felt, both physically and mentally. Working Smarter, Not Harder I don’t say no to appointments, but I’ve learned to be more realistic about my time. I started taking breaks in between clients and made sure to leave 20 minutes between each appointment. It helped me reset and not feel rushed. I also started sending out a weekly newsletter to my clients, which keeps me on their minds without constantly chasing them for bookings. And when I have cancellations, I’ve learned to take it in stride. Instead of stressing, I use that time to rest and recharge. Learning to take a step back and manage my time has made all the difference in how I feel about my work. If you’re struggling with burnout, you’re not alone. It’s okay to admit when you need to take a step back and make changes.

  • 20 Local Business Partnerships to Boost Your Spa's Grand Opening Success

As an esthetician, your grand opening is an exciting opportunity to introduce your business to the community, build connections, and generate buzz. One of the most effective ways to expand your reach and make the event memorable is by partnering with local businesses in your area. Not only will you draw in new clients, but you’ll also create a support network that can benefit your business long after your grand opening. Here are 20 local businesses you should consider reaching out to for a potential partnership: Yoga Studios Yoga studios are a natural fit for your spa, as both industries focus on wellness and self-care. Offer a joint promotion or gift cards for attendees to try out both services. Pilates Studios Similar to yoga, Pilates studios attract health-conscious individuals who might also appreciate skincare services. Collaborating on wellness-themed packages can appeal to your shared clientele. Fitness Centers/Gyms Gyms are full of potential clients looking to take care of their bodies inside and out. Reach out to local fitness centers to offer special skincare treatments for gym members, helping them look as good as they feel. Juice Bars Juice bars attract health-focused individuals who may also be interested in skincare. You can offer a special promotion that pairs skin health with nutritional wellness. Organic Cafés Collaborating with an organic café for your grand opening can be a great way to align with like-minded businesses that promote healthy living. Consider offering skincare consultations or discounts to their customers. Local Health Food Stores Health-conscious shoppers often value skincare routines as part of their holistic approach to wellness. Partner with health food stores to promote special skin-nourishing products or treatments. Boutiques (Clothing or Accessories) Boutiques are great for promoting your grand opening to fashion-conscious customers who might also value skincare. A giveaway collaboration can be an excellent way to cross-promote. Hair Salons Hair salons are often a place where clients come to relax and pamper themselves, making them a great fit for your skincare business. Partner with local stylists to create beauty packages that include hair and skincare services. Nail Salons Much like hair salons, nail salons cater to those who prioritize self-care and aesthetics. You can offer dual promotions that highlight both nail care and skincare services. Massage Therapy Centers People who prioritize their physical well-being through massage therapy are likely to appreciate the benefits of skincare. Collaborate with a massage center to offer exclusive discounts or combined services for an ultimate relaxation package. Chiropractic Offices Chiropractors often work with clients who are focused on overall health and wellness. Partnering with a local chiropractic office could introduce your business to clients who prioritize self-care. Florists Adding a touch of beauty with floral arrangements at your grand opening can elevate the ambiance. Holistic Health Centers Holistic health centers cater to people seeking natural ways to improve their well-being. This is a perfect match for skincare businesses that use clean, natural, or organic products. Spas or Wellness Centers While they may seem like competition, spas and wellness centers could be open to cross-promotion, especially if you offer complementary services like advanced facials or skincare consultations. Local Jewelry Designers Jewelry designers are always looking for ways to promote their unique pieces. Team up to provide clients with a glam experience that combines skincare treatments and jewelry styling for special events. Candle Makers Local candle makers often appeal to clients who appreciate self-care and relaxation. Offering their candles as part of your grand opening goodie bags or raffle prizes could create a memorable client experience. Farmers Markets Partnering with a local farmers market is a great way to reach health-conscious individuals. You could set up a booth at their events or offer discounts to market shoppers in exchange for promoting your grand opening. Art Galleries Art galleries are an unexpected but smart collaboration partner for a skincare business. By hosting part of your event at an art gallery or offering discounts for their patrons, you’ll tap into a cultured, discerning clientele. Daycare Centers or Preschools Many parents who visit daycare centers or preschools could be looking for ways to take time out for themselves. Partnering with these establishments can help you reach busy moms and dads who may be in need of some self-care. Cosmetic Dentists Cosmetic dentists work with clients who are already invested in their appearance. A partnership can give you access to a clientele that values aesthetic treatments, making it a win-win for both parties. Partnering with local businesses can be a powerful strategy to make your grand opening stand out. Not only will it help you reach a broader audience, but it will also foster a sense of community and long-term support for your skincare business. By strategically choosing businesses that align with your values and target audience, you’ll set yourself up for a successful launch and ongoing relationships that benefit everyone involved. By upgrading your bedding with luxurious options from Comphy, incorporating bed warmers and mattresses from Sol Beauty Co., adding seasonal scents, adjusting the lighting, including a luxurious hand treatment with Eco-Fin products from Universal Companies, and adding personal touches, you ensure your spa is ready to offer a comforting and rejuvenating experience as the seasons change. https://solbeautyco.com/ https://www.universalcompanies.com/ https://www.comphy.com/?rfsn=8123935.361d5e
